To put it in the simplest terms, they were simply two warriors in opposing armies who met up and did what came naturally to them as warriors: they fought. However, Achilles had a grudge against Hector, since the latter killed the former's cousin, Patroclus.
The fight was short, and after Achilles defeated Hector by breaking his neck, proceeded to drag his corpse around the battlefield before letting the Trojans reclaim his body.
Interestingly, Achilles was killed a short time later by Paris (Hector's brother), who shot him in the ankle with an arrow (thus giving the Achilles tendon its name).

∙ 13y agoAfter the Trojan offensive on the Greek encampment failed, Achilles lead the counterattack against the Trojans who quickly retreated. Athena disguised herself as Hector's brother, Deiphobus, and convinced Hector that they could fight Achilles together. However, the Olympians took sides in the Trojan War and as Achilles neared Athena disappeared and Hector realised he had been tricked and was defeated.

Achilles had a cousin, Patroclus, who went to battle in Achilles' armour so that the Achaeans would think Achilles still fought with them; in actuality, he was sulking near the ships, as was his wont. When Patroclus went into the fray, Hector killed him, thinking he was Achilles. Achilles was not happy with this, so he challenged Hector to single combat. Like any sensible human being, Hector thought better of it before he actually reached Achilles, and so he started back for Troy. Achilles killed him with a well-aimed spear.

∙ 13y agoAchilles fought on the side of the Achaens and Hector fought on the side of the Trojans during the Trojan war. Achilles was automatically enemies with the Prince of Troy. It was considered that Achilles and Hector were the best warriors in the war. Hector accidentally killed Achilles cousin Patroclus, who dressed as Achilles in order to prove himself. Achilles then took revenge on Hector and killed him. After, he tied Hectors corpse to a chariot and dragged him back to the Achaens camp. This was seen as sacrilege by both sides as it was believed that every man should receive funeral rites.
