It was Henry VIII who broke away from the Catholic church. He believed he needed a male heir to the throne and would need a new wife to achieve that end. Catholicism didn't sanction divorce. Without the Pope as its head, the Anglican Episcopalian church became the recognized Church of England.

According to Holy Bible Abraham had a second wife to get a heir. If Henry was allowed to have a second wife he wouldn't have asked permission for divorce. Either second marriage or divorce were not allowed. He cannot be penalized by imposing laws which r not in The Bible for no reason, and he found no alternatives other than broke away from the church. If laws not allow to fulfill the human's real necessity and force against the reasonable and essential requirement, there will be calamities and breaks away. And give room for those type of happenings and formation of new divisions in the religion. So that was an unsatisfactory state of affair and that made him to broke away

Introduction

Many have tried to examine the points of Henry the 8th shutting down the church, they were split into four angles the first power, the second wealth, the third love and finally faith. I am going to try and explain all four points thoroughly so you can make an informed decision as to why you think Henry closed down the church. It had been 24 years since he had married Catherine of Aragon of Spain and it was beginning to dawn on him of her age. He had wanted for many years a son but Catherine had only given him one child a little girl named Mary. She had given birth to many other children some even boys but those had failed to survive the week and only one healthy child remained a girl and if he didn't do something soon it would be her to take over all that he had built. So in 1538 he knew would have to abandon his wife and settle for divorce. The Pope was a good friend of Henry's and Henry was sure he would accept his request. The Pope however refused to do so and Henry desperate thought only of one way to get what he desired and knew he must break from Rome in order to be released from this woman and her daughter. He would need to shut down all the monasteries in his kingdom and destroy them he would send the nuns and monks packing and devise a new church, a better church, and one where he would finally break free and call it solemnly the Church of England.

Reason 1 for break from Rome (Love)

The reason I feel Henry broke from the church is for love. For many reasons it would seem this was that love is reason that the Church came to be known through it. He needed to divorce Catherine and marry Anne. Anne was a young girl of around 19 who had been Henry's lover for many years. He not only needed to be with Anne for love but for a son she was young enough to provide him with one and often thought he wanted a male heir to the throne. You can tell this in the quickness of his actions to be with Anne and it is said that the main reason for falling in love with Anne was for the promise of a son that she would give to Henry. A son meant he could carry on without a care for his life in war and knowing that his son would be there to take over when he was gone and keep what he had built. There was no point for power and wealth, building an empire for no one. Not knowing if it would go to his daughter or some stranger powerful enough to just get her off it and take England for himself. A measly man for a replacement, to lose all that he had gained. The only way out of this unbearable unknowing to divorce Catherine of Aragon who was too old to provide him with what he needed. However the Pope had refused his proposal as it was not allowed in the Catholic faith. Within 24 years, only one child surviving, after several deaths and many miscarriages Henry knew that Catherine's time for children was over. IF he didn't escape her soon he'd be without a powerful heir. As the Pope had refused, the only way to get what he wanted was to make the break from the Catholic church of Rome. The only way he would get an heir to inherit his wealth and power. He also didn't decide to break from the church until this problem aroused so it must have been very important.

Reason 2 for the break from Rome (Wealth)

However to my recent statement some might argue that it was as the saying goes the straw that broke the camel's back saying it was a final little thing that pushed him over the edge to make him break from the church. I would say that either power or wealth would come next though it would be hard to choose which would come first as it is a sort of which came first the chicken or the egg scenario. As he would need wealth to get power but he would need power in order to get the wealth. I am by no apparent reason choosing wealth as the second. Henry had started wars in many countries; he was not like his father, Henry VIII who was quite a quiet king. Henry wanted wealth and to live in a life of luxury. However he needed money and lots of it to pay for all the wars. He was running low and noticed that all the churches and monasteries had lots of it. Everyone paid church tax and he saw building his own line of churches a great opportunity for more gold and lots of it. If he get that amount of money his wars would be fine. He was on the verge of going broke and losing most of his land so by destroying the monasteries he could get all the income from church tax.

Roman Catholic AnswerEngland became a part of the reformation more through politics than theological debate. King Henry VIII (1509-47) needed an heir to the throne and with his wife was unable to produce one. The Pope would not grant a divorce and so Henry convinced Parliament to declare him head of the Church in England. Henry's daughter, Mary Tudor was a staunch Catholic and persecuted the Protestants. When Henry's other daughter, Elizabeth, inherited the throne, she tolerated the Protestants just enough so as not to irritate the Pope. When the English fleet defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588, the Anglican Church permanently replaced the Catholic one in England.

(Below is an excerpt from the biography of Henry VIII)

In 1534 Henry VIII was declared head of the English Church. People had to swear an oath that in future they would obey Henry as head of the church. More refused and he was convicted of high treason. Still refusing to recant, he was executed at the Tower of London on 6 July 1535.

The Pope and the Catholic church in Rome were horrified when they heard the news that Henry had destroyed St. Thomas Becket's Shrine. On 17 December 1538, the Pope announced to the Christian world that Henry VIII had been excommunicated from the Catholic church.

He didn't. But if you mean his son Henry VIII, the process started because the Pope wouldn't allow him to divorce his first Queen, Catherine of Aragon.
