Hitler's invasion failed because Stalin made use of the Scotched Earth policy just as it had been used before against Napoleon. With the harsh weather changes, and the burning of any usable supplies, the German army quickly began to die off. This allowed Russia to begin pushing back, and splitting up the German forces across several borders. This helped the allies gain victory.

AnswerHitler though his arm was strong and that he could just march in but the weather conditions were terrible as they are in Russia, and this gave russia enough time to get ready for the attack and fight back to win! AnswerThe two answers above are kind of simplistic. Hitler lost to Russia because:

His plans were to control Russia by the Fall. He failed at that and then the German Army was caught unprepared for the cold Russian Winter. That was the coldest winter of the century at the time.

At the beginning of the invasion, the Russian army retreated deep into the country and burned everything on the way so that the Germans would not be albe to use it for their own gain.

Thirdly and probably most importantly... There were SOOO MANY Russians... The Soviets could afford massive casualties and replenish them with new people. Stalin's orders were to not retreat. Anyone retreating would be shot. The Soviet Union was able to mount a massive war effort, both in manpower and in Industry.

Germany was caught in a two front war, West with English and Americans and the East with Russia. That's not a good thing for Germany!

The "non aggression" treaty that is mentioned in the first answer was actually signed by Stalin and Hitler BEFORE the war.. It was Hitler's way of convincing Stalin that he was not going to attack. The Soviet Union entered the war on June 22, 1941, the day that Hitler broke their pact and invaded the Soviet Union through Ukraine.

Hitler had various motives for pushing the German nation into war with Russia. First was the long standing, centuries old, stress between the two nations. Both had vied to control eastern Europe for ages. Russia had constantly pushed west and south. Germany had pushed east. With this age old situation as background came WWII. As usual, the British fought against the continental power, in this case Germany, using economic warfare ( a blockade ). Britain had done this for centuries too, whether the enemy was France, Spain, the Netherlands, or Austria. Germany had suffered terribly during WWI due to the British blockade and Hitler fully knew that it was probably the main element that led to Germany's defeat in that war. Unable to defeat the British blockade at sea, he decided to circumvent it by expanding east - towards Russia. This would ensure Germany much more space for development, agricultural resources, and huge supply increases in many minerals, ores, and fuels. Hitler hoped that the British, unwilling as they were to take on Germany directly, would see that their blockade was thus ineffective and would agree to peace. Additionally, Germany had by this time bested (or allied with) every major military force on the globe save Soviet Russia. Eliminating the Russian army as a threat would essentially make Germany invulnerable since no other nation on earth could field an army capable of defeating them, including the USA. So....could Germany have beaten Russia? The evidence IMO is overwhelming yes. Having beaten Russia handily in WWI (only 20 years prior) using a quarter of her army, Germany thought they could handle the job again, surely, by using 80%. Germany had far and away the finest army on the planet in 1941. It was large, expertly led, well equiped, and relatively mobile and technologically superior to the Russian forces. Hitler knew the Russians had huge number of tanks and planes (more than all the other nations on earth combined) plus hundreds of divisions. But he also knew they were incompetently led and poorly positioned. Hitler thought the German army could destroy the Russian forces within a few weeks and the nation would then collapse politically. Basically Hitler was right - the German army, by November 1941 had destroyed virtually the entire huge Soviet army. However the Soviets were incredibly resourceful ( and ruthless ) and thus able to raise more armies much faster than Germany had anticipated. Additionally the Germans made political mistakes in Russia that cost them much good will. Despite all this the Germans could still have won except that they dramatically over extended their lines - first, December 1941 before Moscow and second, November 1942 at Stalingrad. Each time the Russians were able to counterattack with relatively weak forces and catch the Germans overextended. Both times, the Germans lost about a quarter of their fighting strength on the Russian front. However, by summer 1943, the situation had stabilized again and probably would have led to stalemate. But, by then, American aid was pouring into Russia and the American made trucks by the hundreds of thousands proved invaluable in helping the Russians stay mobile. Russian attacks that should have petered out quickly, carried on for weeks, then months, thanks to all this new found mobility. Using their last ounce of logistics, the Russian were able to carry the fight over into Poland by 1944 and into Germany itself by 1945. In summary Germany could have won (ie, managed a favorable stalemate) in 1941 by seizing Moscow early and going on the defensive. They likely could have won in 1942, albeit with heavier casualties, doing the same thing. And as noted, had they been able to prevent the Soviets gaining mobility via American trucks they could have stabilized the front at some point in 1943 or 44.

Hitler & Germany did not prepare for a long war & did not plan for a sustainable continuous offensive that would last until Stalin was defeated. German logistics & overall manpower were insufficient to handle the great distances covered & German casaulties incurred.

Of course the big question is what would it take "to succeed"? Seize Moscow? Seize Leningrad? Seize Stalingrad? Drive to the Ural Mountains? No one really knows what objectives would have been necessary to occupy to defeat Stalin. At what point would the Communist government of the USSR collapse or surrender?

This leads to the problem for German planning...what would it take to win?
