During early 1800s Japan was ruled by the feudal class under the shogunite. During the mid 1800s I believe Japan the US Navy intervened in Japan to open it up to trade (Japan was under total isolation) and the United States desired to export Capital to Japan. Japan developed Capitalism (Textiles and other industries) Japan, being a major participant in the industrial revolution (as any other Capitalist system needs to do) needed to export Capital to other places (given its geographic location and the rest of the world being dominated by European Imperialism at the time) the logical place to expand for Japan was Asia (See the Japanese colonization of Korea).

The first conflict between China and Japan (Sino-Japanese war) came about due to Japan STILL needing to expand into other areas as the logic of Capitalism dictates. However China was not destroyed by this war.

Japan had colonies in Korea but still needed to expand Capital, Both the Russian empire and the Japanese empire desired to expand into Manchuria. The insufficient Pseudo Feudal military of the Tsar was swiftly crushed by the Japanese army in 1905 (As it would be against the Germans in the 1st world war a few years later) and Japan was able to continue to expand its economic influences into Manchuria.

During the great depression Japan faced economic decline as the rest of the world (with the exception of the Soviet Union) did. This decline would lay the grounds for a far right military coup of the Japanese government in favor of the Emperor of Japan as a figure head and the Japanese military. The Second Sino-Japanese war broke out for the same reason, Japanese expansionism.

Japan invaded the USSR along with Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and the rest of the Fascist bloc, as Stalin's troops made there counter offensive (Eventually defeating the Fascists in Berlin) they continued to wage war against the Japanese Imperialists who's short (and pathetic) invasion attempt had failed. That is why we have North Korea today (When the Japanese empire declined Soviet/American influence entered Korea.
