The Meditation was written as an "entracte" - a piece of music to be played between scenes or acts in an Opera. The opera is Thais, and Meditation is played in the middle of Act II which has two scenes. It represents the main character's struggle with a difficult decision: continue her life as a courtesan and devotee' of Venus, or enter into the Convent, and devote her life to the Christian God.
