The first accommodation built in the city of St Petersburg was a wooden house for Peter the Great himself. The domik is very small - only 60 sq. meters and is a strange combination of a traditional Russian house - izba - and a Dutch home with large and elaborate windows and high roof, covered with wooden tiles. Peter lived in this house between 1703 and 1708 and the living room, the bedroom, and the study, filled with Peter's original belongings, still bear the mark of his presence.

Peter built a new capital for two main reasons:

1. He wanted to be closer to the inland European countries and not far and isolated. It made trading through the sea easier. The new city (made of mostly of stone) was a new beginning which brings me to the second point

2. St. Petersburg also became the face of the new Russia, inspired by other European "beauties", especially Versailles. Moscow was old and traditional. Peter wanted a new and innovative country

Peter the Great built the city of St. Petersburg to honor himself and the czarist movement. Like Stalingrad would honor Stalin years later, St. Petersburg was both a holy and political city for the Czars.

Why did peter the great build the city of st. petersburge?

When he was Czar Russia was a land locked country and he had been to the rest of Europe. He could see that to make Russia like the rest of Europe he needed a water route to the ocean so that he could build a navy and have a shipping route to Russia. The land he took actually belonged to Finland, but he fought them for it and got it. When he began to build the city the land was a swampy marshy site, so he had to build that up before he could build. He had 25,000 surfs work on turning the swamp into land that could be used. The first thing he built was a fort and was made of wood. Very little of the first buildings still exist because the wood decayed over time. The city he built is very European with multicolored buildings on 41 islands and there are canals. I went there in 08 and found a beautiful city that is remarkable to this day. Peter the Great also built a magnificent place outside the city and later Catherine the Great took the winter place and filled it with art. Today it is one of the worlds greatest museums.
