Juan Ponce de Leon first came to Florida in 1513. In 1521 de Leon later returned to perform a permanent settlement. The Native Americans didn't like that idea so they declared war. Ponce De Leon explored the southeast coast of North America and in 1513 gave Florida its name (named for the flowers of the Easter season).
He is now mostly remembered for his belief in (and unsuccessful search for) the legendary "Fountain of Youth," which was thought to exist somewhere in the region around Florida.
Juan Ponce de Leon was credited for the discovery of Florida, but may not have been the first to find it. He discovered Florida while looking for the Fountain of Youth, which was a European myth back then.
