The route to the East had long been cut out by the Turkish Empire, and Columbus, knowing at the time that the Earth was round - thanks to earlier thinkers like Eratosthenes and Ptolemy - knew that he could reach the Indies if instead he traveled far enough west. But Columbus didn't know that North and South America was in the way. He underestimated the size of the Earth and (re)discovered America. Plus both Columbus and his Spanish financial backers, King Ferdinand II of Aragón & Queen Isabella I of Castile, were staunch Roman Catholics, and saw the voyage as an opportunity to spread, what they considered to be, the words of the almighty.

Columbus' reason for sailing west from Spain was to find an ocean route to the Indies, source of valuable spices and silk. After that, the main focus of the Spanish explorers the search for gold and and other valuable minerals, such as silver and gemstones. The Spanish monarchs also valued the territory that the explorers claimed on their behalf, much of it rich land that could be used for farming, using Native American and Black slaves for labor.
