Steve perry had a pain in his left hip. he found out there was something wrong with it and he needed surgery to fix it. he didn't want to get the surgery. he couldn't tour! Neal schon really wanted to tour and so did the rest of the band. they hadn't toured in about three years and neal decided, "get the surgery or pack your bags! we all want to tour, it's not our fault the band's not doing anything! why sould we do something for you if you don't do something for us! you're doing something for us, holding us back!" Steve perry didn't want to get the surgery so, hello new singer! in the next aalbum arrival, there was a Steve augeri (awe-jare-ee), which was, in the way his singing voice voice was, Steve perry with a different last name and a perm! the band also replaced the other Steve, drummer Steve smith, with drummer from bad English, deen castronovo. Steve perry ended up getting the surgery because of how bad it hurt.

Short answer: He can't go home again. Perry created bad blood in the band, and he scorched earth with Columbia Records.

After recording his first successful solo album, "Street Talk," in 1984, at the height of the band's popularity, Perry himself produced Journey's next album, "Raised on Radio," in 1986. During the recording of that album he unceremoniously fired founding member Ross Valory (bass), and studio musicians played bass on that album. (As an aside, American Idol's Randy Jackson was the bass player on the tour.) The same happened with drummer Steve Smith, and different drummers were used on that album. While the "Raised on Radio" tour was successful, there was tension with Perry running the show.

Over the next few years the other band members pursued other projects, and Perry released his second solo album in 1995, which was a flop.

In 1996, mostly at the insistence of Columbia Records, the band's most commercially successful lineup of Schon, Valory, Cain, Smith and Perry reunited to record the album "Trial By Fire," which was produced by Kevin Shirley. One single on that album actually earned the band its first ever Grammy nomination. After the album's release, however, Perry injured his hip and refused to tour to promote the album.

Faced with an ultimatum by Columbia to have hip surgery, rehab and go on tour (or else), Perry officially quit the band in 1997. The decision to leave was his.

Despite rumors to the contrary, he has never sought to rejoin the band, although he did pose with band members when Journey earned a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

At present, the band has no reason to reach out to Perry given the success (and infusion of energy) they are enjoying from current lead singer Arnel Pineda, who has been well received by fans.
