By 1981, the group "hit a belly-up period," in Sylvester's words, and some members of the band wanted to split with longtime manager Robin Britten, who was "a bit of a Brian Epstein type." Sylvester backed Britten.

"We took a vote, and Bernie Calvert and I lost and we decided to leave. Robin had set us up for life: we owned all of our publishing, and to this day I still get my 20 per cent of the group royalties. We're still in contact because we have to make business decisions.
