Why did Vincent van Gogh cut his ear off?

Answer:
It was an act of madness. On Christmas Eve 1888, physically and emotionally exhausted, van Gogh snapped under the strain; after arguing with Gauguin, he cut off the lower half of his own left ear.
He cut off part of his ear because he was completamente pazzo, or completely crazy and he gave it to a prostitute he knew.
