In 1995, Will and Sheree decided to separate, which later led to a December divorce. "I had no business getting married. Neither one of us was ready. We hadn't experienced enough life yet to be together," Will said.

Although Sheree did force the divorce, Will said it was no one person's fault. They both realized they were too young when they married and they just weren't in love anymore. Will has said that he would have stayed married to Sheree for the sake of Trey even though he wasn't happy in that relationship. "I stood up in front of God, my family and friends and said 'Till death do us part'. And if you don't mean that, then don't say it," Will said.

"That's really the only thing in my life, I consider a failure," he says. "I feel that much more pain, having been divorced. I saw that (with his parents). I saw what that mistake was."

The divorce proceedings led to a $900,000 lumpsum divorce settlement plus $24,000 per month in alimony and child support, this equals $288,000 a year. After the first initial shock of the divorce, it was Jada who helped Will and Sheree come to terms with everything for Trey's sake. Sheree even lived with Will and Jada for a time and joked about how was she ever going to meet a man when she lived with her ex-husband. At the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, Will thanked his wife, and ex-wife, for their maturity to make the best of the situation with their kids. Will and Jada's children call Sheree Auntie Ree Ree and see her as just another addition to the family.
