Why did drama appear in literature?

Drama Came First

From what I understand, some of the first known literature was drama. The Ancient Greeks recited and performed plays such as "Antigone". This pre-dates the novel by about a millennium.

Earliest Forms of Literature

The earliest Western literature was, as far as is known, the epic, followed by drama. It is believed that the lyric is also one of the earliest forms, too. However, narrative of various kinds isn't new.
