Buddha was impossible to portray because his radiance was too blindingly brilliant, and it made it impossible for an artist to accurately see his features or even his outline.

Here is the story:

During Buddha's lifetime, two Kings, Utayana and Bimbisara, used to exchange gifts. King Utayana gave King Bimbisara a priceless gem. Bimbisara wanted to have an image of the Buddha painted on cloth to give in return. After receiving the consent of the Buddha, Bimbisara sent his court artists to paint Buddha Shakyamuni's portrait. When artists looked upon the Buddha, however, they were so blinded by his radiance and so filled with wonder that they were unable to draw make out his features or even his outline. Then the Buddha led one of the artists to a clear pool and told him to paint his likeness from the reflection in the water. This the artist did, surrounding the portrait with images of the twelve links of dependent origination and with religious advice given by Buddha. King Utayana was greatly moved by this gift. That day, he prayed and meditated on the symbols of the twelve links, and he attained the path of seeing. As aresult, this style of painting came to be known as 'The image of the Sage taken from the water' (Chu-len-ma).

How do you become a Buddhist?

It is fairly simple. If you have investigated the Buddha's teachings and have come to believe that this is the path (and it is a path) that you want to follow in your life then you simply need to take the refuge ceremony, either by yourself, or in a Buddhist Temple or with a Buddhist Monk. The refuge ceremony is your statement that you intend to use the Buddha (the first know enlightened one), his teachings (the Dharma) and his followers (The Sangha, which is the Monks, Nuns, lay persons that follow The Buddha and all enlightened beings (other Buddhas)) as your guides in life. It is well explained here: See : Related links
