Basically, Finland just didn't want to be taken over.
Finland's attacks against Russia were primarily out of defence. Russia instigated the attacks. Their main motive in attacking Finland at the beginning of the war was because holding Finland would give them a strategical advantage in fighting Germany.
Finland's involvement in WW2 can be summarized by three periods:
1) Russia's initially invading of Finland. Finland's 250,000 soldiers caused the 1,000,000 invading Russians to retreat from their initial invasion and regroup in Russia.
2) Finland allowing Germany into the country to battle Russia.
3) Finland driving out Germany after they refused to leave the country.
The moral of the story is, don't mess with Finland.
