To have a chance for a better life
It would mostly depend on what country. For instance, the Great Potato Famine in Ireland caused a huge influx of Irish immigrants into the U.S., but the general right answer would be the poster's before me: To have a better life.
Many immigrants came to the American colonies for religious and political freedoms. They also sought to begin farms or work on ones that were already in existence. Generally speaking their idea was to start "anew" in a place that they had heard about and there were opportunities in the colonies that were not available in Europe. The large group of Irish people came as Ireland had been a land of famine for far too long. If these new people had skills in craft making, there were opportunities in that area. Also, there was a growing fishery industry here.
Some Scottish immigrants to America were forced there as convicted prisoners, but most came seeking an opportunity for a better life, as did most other immigrants to America.
