I think Peter thought, even hoped that Jesus was the Christ. But thinking is not knowing. His life was more important to him than that of a near stranger who he thought was the Christ but was not sure.

The reason why Peter denied Jesus was to show that Jesus knows our heart at present and future, expose the frailty of man, strengthen us through example, how deny sel preservation for Jesus sake and not be ashamed, and not to fear the opinion of the world and popular view. Even after three years of being discipled by Jesus, Peter was to show the richness of God's mercy and forgiveness through Peter's repentance from this personal act of his.
