I'm not sure what the answerer above me was getting at exactly, but a few reasons I know of, and mind you this list is neither complete nor categorized, are as follows

-Some wanted the unconditional surrender of Germany (Henry Cabot Lodge Sr.--reservationist)

-Some believed the League of nations would result in the US entering conflicts when it was not of national interest to do so

-Some believed the League of Nations would minimize the US's power in decisions concerning the war

Mainly, they were opposed to the League of Nations. Hopefully, someone will stumble along who has a more extensive knowledge of this, but for now, I hope my contribution is somewhat helpful.

On the other hand, President Wilson was in favor of the Treaty of Versailles. Wilson's inability to compromise with these Republican senators with the amendment of the Fourteen Points as proposed by Wilson was the main reason why the Treaty of Versailles was defeated. Why did the unite states reject the treaty of Versailles?

USA did not reject treaty of Versailles. After the elections of 1918 US senate was controlled by Republican Party. However, even the party remained divided over Treaty of Versailles and it was not possible to gain two third majority in senate for ratification of the treaty. That is the reason why USA did not ratify the treaty despite being a pivotal force behind its passage.
