I'm not sure what the answerer above me was getting at exactly, but a few reasons I know of, and mind you this list is neither complete nor categorized, are as follows
-Some wanted the unconditional surrender of Germany (Henry Cabot Lodge Sr.--reservationist)
-Some believed the League of nations would result in the US entering conflicts when it was not of national interest to do so
-Some believed the League of Nations would minimize the US's power in decisions concerning the war

However, even the party remained divided over Treaty of Versailles and it was not possible to gain two third majority in senate for ratification of the treaty. That is the reason why USA did not ratify the treaty despite being a pivotal force behind its passage.
