The natural reaction when someone leaves you is to blame yourself. You wonder what you said or did that sent the other person away.

The other reaction is to blame the other person. You may even wish to punish them for rejecting you.

Unfortunately, neither option will do you any good.

The relationship broke down. The fact that you don't know why it broke down is an indication that the relationship was not healthy to begin with. How could you be unaware that something so important was approaching. Either your partner was concealing her true feelings, or you were not open to the messages she was sending. In either case, you did not have a true relationship.

Open communication between partners is the only basis for a lasting relationship. Let this sad experience sharpen your awareness of what is going on between you and other people. Practice saying what you mean. Listen carefully to others and try to judge if they are open or closed emotionally.

Life is full of skills that can be learned and strengthened. By the time you are ready for a new relationship, you may do a much better job of recognizing and holding on to a true and lasting love.
