An example of exploration to the east would be the Crusades. The Crusades happened for multiple reasons one was to flush out heretics and Muslims and the other was to get the riches that the East held in store.
On the face of it, the primary motivation of the Crusades was to restore the Holy Land to Christian control. It had numerous other reasons such as: preventing the fall of the Byzantine Empire, riches and travel for sheltered Europeans, permission to murder openly, heroism and chivalry, and loyalty to their liege and country.

People joined the Crusades for a couple of reasons, the main one being that the church encouraged people to do it. People were told that if they fought in the Crusades, even if they were killed, that all of their sins would be forgiven and they would automatically enter into heaven. Other people just joined the crusades for the riches.

During the middle Ages, the two primary religions in conflict during the Crusades were Christianity and Islam. Forces from each side fought for many reasons, and many of them religious: each side wished to influence the other on behalf of their own religious convictions.
