They wore feathers as a way of showing off their prowess in battle. So the more feathers they had on them the more inportent they were. Feathers were awarded for first, second, third and fourth strikes in counting coup, amongst other things.

Take a look at the links below for images of many native Americans without feathers in their hair. It follows that not all native Americans wore feathers; those that did had many different reasons for doing so.

Some were simply for decoration, particularly among those warriors who wore a "scalp lock" - most of the head shaved except for a tail or clump or braid of hair at the back of the top of the head. This scalp lock was decorated with beads, bone, feathers, bits of shell or anything else.

Some tribes awarded particular types of feather in recognition of outstandingly brave deeds in war; some awarded a feather for a wound received; some for counting coup; others for leading a war party or stealing an enemy horse.

Every tribe was different and there was never any kind of universal feather symbolism.
