long ago the sabre tooth tigers were not plentiful and did or had not breed much so they were not many cubs and they were always being killed and sometimes ran out of survival untill they all died
Saber-toothed cats probably began to decline and finally died out because many of the large prey species that they depended on, like mammoths, sloths, and American camels (camelops) became extinct. Their prey died out for unknown reasons, although theories include climate change or diseases.
The sabre-toothed tiger lived in the Ice Age and was adapted to that environment. A shortage of food could have been responsible for its decline, or increased competition from other co-existing cat species as the climate changed.
There is still speculation on the cause for their extinction, but it is widely accepted that the climate is a major reason and perhaps humans played a role since they were hunting. The saber tooth tigers and other species of that era went extinct around the same time, which suggests some universal factor. Humans alone could not have done something as drastic as killing off an entire species at that time. It is most probable that the saber tooth tigers could not handle the climate changes because if their prey could not survive, then they could not either.
