Russian did not leave the USSR. Rather, after the disastrous Soviet campaign in Afghanistan, satellites (Providences such as Georgia, Turkmenistan, Estonia, etc) started their own civil wars and pronounced themselves independent nations.

After the Soviet Union collapse in 1991, almost every satellite was an independent country. Russian was one of those.

The collapse of the USSR was due to the Soviet Union spent too much money on weapons at the expense of their people needing food, shelter, and clothing. The government was propping up Cuba, eastern Europe, and even some parts of Africa. The Soviet Union had many countries to govern and many of them resented Soviet interference.
