The reason the US got involved in the Middle East was because of the terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001. President Bush decided to go after the terrorists on their own territory and bring them to justice. However, it would take many more years before Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the plot, would ever be killed.

The United States had a strong interest in acquiring petroleum to fuel its growing economy and so wished to maintain a strong presence in the Middle East. Additionally, the only high-petroleum area of the world was the Soviet Union, so controlling the Middle East meant that the US could continue to oppose the USSR without being required to buy energy from them.

The Middle East had the largest amount of petroleum outside of the Russian Empire and the US wanted to make sure that it had access to that resource, even with the specter of a Russian-American Cold War.
