The first farming societies were located along rivers because farms need water to survive. Without the modern invention of Plumbing, it would be impossible to sustain a farm in a location far from water.

Farming civilizations developed along rivers because if they were to far from water the crops would have dry out and die before harvest!. Farmers just can't wait for rain, even back then! Where the first farming civilizations started were dry places! Farmers HAD to find a way to get water on a daily bases, thous, they moved by rivers!

The ancient mesopotamians settled along those rivers because it was a water source to drink, it had fish to eat, and it was used for transportation.
