The Chicago fire killed 300 people and left 100,000 homeless. The ruins were built over. A building boom began. The city planners came up with building codes to make the city safer. Buildings of brick and stone replaced the wood. Skyscrapers were built. And in 20 years the city was ready to show the world how great it had become.
