the reason the Titanic struck the iceberg (in my opinion) is because Bruce Ismay instructed for the captain to speed up because he thought that if he arrived at new york earlier than everyone would be surprised and he would break records and win an award, so when the lookout spotted the iceberg it was to late...

It ran into an iceberg.

Very true, but I interpret the question as asking, "How could the Titanic, the most modern ship then afloat, run into an iceberg and sink with such a great loss of life?" There is no one main reason, but multiple reasons which conspired to cause the disaster.

* Ship running at top speed through ice at night before the invention of radar.

* Lookouts not given binoculars.

* Triple-shaft propulsion made the ship slow to steer, and Titanic would have remained afloat if hitting the iceberg head on instead of trying to go around it.

* Poor quality steel buckled easily in cold water.

* Inadequate number of lifeboats.

* As the Titanic broadcast her SOS, only the Carpathia was listening, and her captain responded as quickly as possible, but the Carpathia was too far away to arrive before the Titanic sank. Other ships were closer and could have effected a rescue easily, but their radios were shut off for the night.

If you are asking why it sunk then I believe I can help. The cause was hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean on April 14,1912. 4 days after its launch on April 10, 1912. The iceberg tore a huge whole in 5 of the bottom chamber the ships builder had only built the ship so 4 of the chambers could fill up and still float. Other conspiracies include a ancient Eygptian artifact that was on the Titanic that was considered to be a cursed item to have cause the ships sinking.

The Titanic hit an iceburg. Or, maybe the iceburg hit the Titanic. Either way, the iceburg won.
