It was used as a defoilant to deny cover and concealment to the NVA/VC.
Agent Orange or Herbicide Orange was used during the Vietnam War as part of Operation Ranch Hand. It was first developed in 1943.
American soldiers (US Army) didn't use agent orange. American airmen (US Air Force) deployed it from their aircraft during Operation Ranch Hand. Mission: Destroy forests (vegetation) on the ground in RVN (Republic South Vietnam).
Agent Orange was as chemical used to destroy forests (jungles) in South Vietnam. It was sprayed by choppers and fixed wing transport planes (C-130s mostly). It was later replaced by Rome Plows (bull dozers) operated by the US Army Engineers. Vehicles hit by that stuff could be easily de-contaminated. However, many military vehicles during the Vietnam war stayed there, as they were turned over to the ARVNs (Army Republic South Vietnam-South Viet Government). This included helicopters, jets, airplanes, tanks, artillery, and wheeled vehicles.
No. Air Force C-123's from Project Ranch Hand flew more than 6,500 sorties spraying Agent Orange and Agent Blue. Army Huey's were also used to spray the colored agents, but far fewer sorties and far less coverage. The C-123's covered something like 5% of the land mass of South Viet Nam.

Millions of veterans are dealing with the after effects of Agent Orange (called such because of the Orange band painted around the barrels). During the war, the Military color coded their ordnance: yellow meant explosive, red meant chemical, blue meant inert (training rounds), black was armor piercing. Those colors might be modified into other catagories.

Agent orange is a defoliation ( basically a massive weed killer) it was used to cut back on the dense forest that the VC used to hide in. As well as cutting back on the forest it also contaminated water supplies causing deformaties in the Vietnamese children.
Napalm was used by the US Army because the Vietcong( North Vietnam) used guerrilla tactics and there jungles were so think the us army had to find a way throw with out getting attack from surprise. The napalm is a jelly based atomic bomb that set the jungle on fire. napalm was not the only thing they used they also use agent orange witch was a pesticide that killed the plants.

One possibly might be the US Army "Rome Plows" (bulldozers) that circled jungles until they disappeared (ran around in circles until the circle got smaller and smaller, then finally there was no more jungle). Rome Plows replaced "Agent Orange."

For North Vietnam or South Vietnam? The North Vietnamese were known simply as the 'North Vietnamese Army' (NVA) to US forces, but their actual title was Vietnam Peoples' Army, as it common practice in Communist states. The South Vietnamese Army was referred to as the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN).
The People's Army of Vietnam, also called the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) was the main army for North Vietnam (communist). However, remember the VPA was not the same group as the Viet Cong.
