Gold is a precious metal and has monetary value. It represented Jesus' Kingship.

Frankincense is another resin, an aromatic one, from the milky sap of the Boswellia Tree. it is used as perfume, incense and in aromatherapy today, and was used in religious rites in Jesus' time. This represented homage to God.

Myrrh is a resin (dried sap) from the Myrrh tree. It is used in perfumes and incense. It was commonly used as an embalming ointment in Jesus' day. This was a startling gift for a young boy--it represented His death.

All of these were costly gifts.

To show that Jesus was a king.

Sometimes the gold is said to symbolize virtue, frankincense prayer, and myrrh suffering.

It is most likely that the gift of Frankincense was but a symbolic gift. The dictionary reads it meaning as "An aromatic gum resin obtained from various Arabian or East African trees; formerly valued for worship and for embalming and fumigation". It is possible that it signifies the eventual death of Christ. Remember the scriptures only tell us that they were Wise Men from the east. Is it not possible that they were prophets?

These three gifts of 'the three wise men' to Jesus, seem to indicate the Lordship of Christ.

As the gold shows his kingly status;

The frankincense shows that he is to be praised always - this precious resin is used in the Old Testament sacrifices and offerings, except the offerings for sin.

The myrrh is a very fragrant perfume often used for dead bodies, and with Jesus, could point toward his resurrection.

It is no doubt allegorical that these gifts were given by the so called three wise men.

They were, at the time, valuable, and meant to imply that the child was also valuable and important. To many that is the case.

At the time of Jesus' birth, gold, frankinsense and myrrh were accessable only to the wealthy. They were showing their reverence to the baby king. Some think that the gifts of the Magi were also symbolic. Gold for a king, frankinsense and myrrh for divinity. This may or may not have been the case. It is true when we want to honor someone or something we offer the best we have. This was the idea behind the gifts.

Go back and read the relevant entries in the Gospels.

There were *not* "three wise men" - the story only refers to "wise men", but does not say how many.
