Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day. The armistice ending the hostilities of World War I went into effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 (11:00, November 11, 1918.) (WWI did not officially end until June 28, 1919 when the Treaty of Versailles was signed.) The first Armistice Day was celebrated on November 11, 1919 to honor all who had served in the military during "The Great War." It was not until June 1, 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, that November 11 was officially renamed as Veterans Day and was designated to honor veterans of all wars in which the US had been involved.
