By 1850 when CA became a state it was a mute point. Congress had reached the agreement that anything pass the Mason/Dixon line would be free. California was also 2500 miles away from the fight and had little to add. Some Union troops were stationed in the state, but not a great number. Texas was much more involved since the first Texans came to settle because they wanted slaves. Mexico outlawed slavery before it became a state. Many union troops who supported slavery would show their dissatisfaction by wearing their belt buckles upside-down. This happened in Texas with a lot of the time.
