The couple, after being together for quite some time (their first kiss took place in New Teen Titans vol. 1 #2 (1980); they began dating in New Teen Titans vol. 1 #25 (1982)), were beginning to feel strains in their relationship, aggravated by living together (since New Teen Titans vol. 2 #39 (1988)), Kory's blooming modeling career, growing anti-alien sentiment, and Dick's divided attention between a dwindling Titans roster and the chaos occurring in Gotham City (the injury and replacement of Batman in the "Knightsend/Knightsfall" storyline --the mantle of whom Dick himself would take up soon after (Batman #512 (1994)). In an impulsive effort to keep Kori in his life and find some stability, Dick proposed marriage (New Titans #99 (1993)).

After a very short engagement, they made it as far as the altar (New Titans #100 (1993)), but they were interrupted by the return of Raven before the ceremony was able to take place. Having become possessed by the power of Trigon, she had allied herself with Deathwing and a pair called Judge and Jury. Together, they murdered the minister and proceeded to attack Nightwing while the evil Raven infects Starfire with a "demon seed," believed to be one of Trigon's unborn children.

Overwhelmed by the experience, Kory underwent a restorative warrior ritual from her native culture (New Titans #109-11 (1994)). While this helped her to overcome the trauma she endured and brought her closer to her alien roots, it also drove a wedge between herself and Dick. As things continued to deteriorate, Nightwing announced he was leaving the team and Starfire opted to return to her native planet of Tamaran, seeing no reason to stay (New Titans #114 (1994)).

On Tamaran, she realized how much she had missed her planet and people. She also met General Ph'yzzon of the First Order of the Golden Sun and the two were obviously attracted to each other (New Titans #127 (1995)). This attraction led to a brief courtship which, in turn, led to a marriage proposal. Princess Koriand'r accepted and the general became the fourth beau intent on marrying the exotic princess (New Titans #129 (1995)).

Meanwhile, Dick took on new responsibilities as a protector for the crime-ridden city of Bludhaven, finding himself at odds with the crime boss Blockbuster and a corrupt police force (Nightwing #1-3 (1996)).

Soon it would be revealed that Raven had actually imparted the "seed" of her good self in Starfire and soon the evil Raven traveled to the Vega System to forever destroy what remained of her moral soul. A battle ensued, ending when the evil Raven was destroyed, but at the sacrifice of Tamaran (New Titans #128 (1995)). Koriand'r saw it her responsibility to lead the survivors of her home planet on a new world, New Tamaran, rather than returning to Earth with her former teammates. A new golden Raven, formed from the good "seed" Starfire carried, even tells the newlyweds that Kory may be pregnant (New Titans #130 (1995); truly a new start for Tamaran.

Unfortunately, over time, the married couple began to drift apart and when Ph'yzzon sides with Koriand'r's sister, Queen Komand'r. regarding her plan to deal with the menace of the Sun-Eater, Starfire found herself branded a traitor and banished. This would save her the fate that both her husband and New Tamaran suffered when the planet was consumed by the Sun-Eater (Final Night Preview (1996)). Koriand'r grieved for the loss of her world and her husband, even though the marriage had evolved into one of mere formality, but pressed on to Earth to warn the heroes of the planet that the Sun-Eater was coming.

Eventually, Starfire would rejoin the Titans in an effort to save her former teammate Cyborg. Nightwing and Starfire are finally reunited and agree that they still regard each other as friends, but go no further. (JLA/Titans: The Technis Imperative #1-3 (1998-1999))

Starfire remained on Earth for a time, before returning once more to assist her people (Titans #17 (2000)), but the former couple's relationship remained awkward and they never managed -perhaps out of fear, too much time having passed, Kory's many failed relationships, or Dick's then budding relationship with Barbara Gordon (Oracle)- to rekindle their romance.
