I sprayed myself with Jungle Formula insect repellent and (much to the amusement of my fellow campers) I was slowly surrounded by midges that were attracted to the smell. They also surrounded the spray bottle. To be fair, the midges didn't bite me, but they were so irritating that I went and showered it off - which solved the problem! Won't be buying that brand again

Millipedes do NOT bite humans... If handled they can secrete a mild poison that can irritate some people's skin. Do not confuse them with a house centipede however... Those do bite

A common genus of midges is "Chironomus."
Midges are members of an insect family called Chironomidae. They have similar wing and body structures as mosquitoes but they are missing the elongated proboscis. The proboscis is what the female mosquito bites with. Males have it too, but they just use it to suck nectar from plants. Mosquitoes also have scales on the wings.
