The reasons stem from anticatholicism and it would be quite the effort to root out the origin of every last accusation. This accusation has at its center a misunderstanding about what prayer is. They confuse prayer with adoration. A prayer is a request, as per the old English usage: "prithee (I pray thee) come hither", which simply means I request you to come here. When we pray to the saints we are asking them in turn to intercede with us before God, that is, to pray for us. Protestants and Catholics alike do this often when we ask another believer to pray for a certain intention (a sick family member, for instance).
Adoration, on the other hand, is the worship intended only for God. When protestants see a Catholic knelt before a statue of a saint praying, they are reminded of the primitive religions where people adored totems, which were supposed to contain their Gods, and assume that they are being adored, or given worship. This would indeed be idolatry, or the worship of idols, but this is not what is being done.
