Spider, common name for about 34,000 species of arthropod animals (in a group of organisms called chelicerates) having eight walking legs, anterior appendages bearing fangs and poison glands, and specialized reproductive organs on the second appendages of the male. They commonly make extensive use of silk that they spin. Like other arachnid species, spiders are terrestrial, although a few have adapted to freshwater life by trapping air bubbles underwater and carrying the bubbles with them. Spiders are numerous and occur worldwide.

Although most are less than 1 cm (less than 0.4 in) long, the largest has a body length of about 9 cm (about 3.6 in), and spider leg spans can be much greater. You can get more information by watching tv shows about spiders. That's where I got my information.

It is believed that selection on their ancestors favored eight legs because of how they localize prey (hunt).

Some robotics research attempts to answer the question: how many legs are necessary or sufficient for locomotion? Experiments show that six legs easily provide stability.

It might be that a spider's "extra" pair of legs is for spinning a web or capturing prey while the other six legs provide stable locomotion.

It might also be that a spider's eight legs provide more stable locomotion while walking on a web, which constrains where a leg may be placed. In other words, stable locomotion on a web requires more legs than walking on the ground, which is a plane.
A spider is classed as an Arachnid, and therefore by definition will posses eight legs.

They have eight legs to help them move around and catch food. The little suckers on all of the long legs help to grip to things and have the same effect as a plunger.

Beetles do not have eight legs. All insects have six legs. Arachnids like spiders are the ones with eight.
