∙ 13y agoThe answer before mine was just ridiculous and completely wrong. Studying Biology which is almost considered as my job in school I have learned that biologically birds fluff up their feathers to keep warm. This is hard to imagine so let me simplify this.
What happens when you are cold and you are wearing short sleeves? You get goosebumps. Goosebumps happen when you are feeling cold and the hears on your skin raise. Why is this? The explanation is very hard to believe but what happens is that when the hairs are raised air and dust circulates around your skin. The hairs trap the air and dust, in the process heating the air and dust. Eventually the skin warms up as well.
In the case of birds this is what happens although they do not have hairs but feathers to carry out this task. Also the feathers on the bird which make up a large surface area compared to the surface area on the body help to separate the warm air from the cold air, keeping the cold air away.
I am completely sure about this theory as I have carried out many experiments to prove this. This is the only true answer.
