A dog has "body language" when it wags its tail it is saying "be friends with me or I'm happy" but when a cat wags its tail it saying "stay away, I'm ready to fight", so the cats best instinct is to fight first, and the dog fights back, and the cat , then the dog, and well you get what you call a "cat-dog fight''.
They are different species and they just don't get along with different species! i hope that helped!

∙ 14y agoCats and dogs fight because of basic instincts. In the wild, you have wild dogs, lions, jaguars, etc which are considered carnivores. They eat meat, and since they have to hunt & kill their food, there always is competition for the food. Especially in times of drought or when food is scare. Other times, if one species has made a kill and the other hasn't and he is starving, they feel no qualms about stealing another animals kill.
This instinct is very strong in carnivores and has not been bred out of cats or dogs. Most dogs and cats will fight over "territory" even among their own kind. There is the rare occasions when they can become friends, but for the most part, in a household where they do not have to "hunt" for food, they may just tolerate each other.

∙ 7y agoOurs do not- they are over there curled up together taking a nap. Some dogs will attack cats as they are a smaller animal (usually). Most of the dog vs. cat is not true.
