How do you find runaway stray cats?

Best Answer

Cats can run away for many reasons, such as:

  • They have been upset in some way (a new cat or some other large change in the household)
  • Their environment has been changed (moving house, or furniture being moved around too much)
  • Or they just decided to! Many owners believe that a cat chooses its owners, and not the other way around. Sometimes a cat will just move on and find a different house to live in.

AnswerYou first knock on all the surrounding houses to find out if the cat has been seen. Ask people to check garages and sheds - they have a habit of sometimes getting shut in. Call the local vet and ask if a cat has been handed in and the RSPCA. Print posters and leaflets and put on lamp posts or the local supermarket notice board.

Much of this depends on the age of the cat and whether or not it has been neutered. An un-neutered male (Tom) will often disappear for days at a time and travel for miles and miles looking for a mate. Neutered males stay closer to home. If it is a young cat who has only recently been let outside, then it may be that the animal has simply gone off exploring and will return when it is ready (they do have a habit of doing this I'm afraid). Print out leaflets and post them through peoples doors asking them to check garages, vans and sheds. Put an advert in the local paper.

AnswerMy cat has been gone for a few days and I suggest you post it on Facebook or MySpace to alert the greater public to your strife. AnswerThey do sometimes come back when they disappear for a couple of days. If it is hot then the cat may simply have gone exploring and become dehydrated - in which case the cat will rest for as long as necessary before returning home. Alternatively, the cat may simply be exploring. Keep calling the cat as much as possible. After all of this, I'm afraid there is little else you can do aside from wait. Sometimes cats have been known to disappear for 2 years or more and then, suddenly and without warning, show up as if nothing has happened.

Good luck.

AnswerIf its an outdoor cat, don't worry or panic until its been gone maybe a week. Cats like to hunt. And cats also tend to be greedy and get food from friendly old ladies. Make sure your cat has a collar thought or else someone that feeds it bits and pieces with think its not owned, and take it for themselves. People do things like that. If its missing more than a week, start getting posters up saying missing cat. Might seem mad but it works pretty well. Just ask to put in shop windows or lamp posts.

Everyday put a wet can of cat food or a can of fish outside your house. This way stray cats will smell the food from anywhere around your neighborhood and will come to your doorstep. Keep and eye out for the cats after you put out the food because this works like a charm. It work great when we lost our cat and our friend who lived nearby did this and found him. :) Good Luck! -KTD

Don't give up hope. We have a female, spayed calico cat who disappears occasionally during the summer especially. She's been gone for as long as 4 1/2 weeks. She's always been an indoor/outdoor cat, but since we added 2 more cats (brother and sister) to our household, she tends to stay outside longer. When they are together they tolerate each other, but certainly aren't close friends! I didn't want the same thing to happen with the other 2, so I keep them in most of the time. They have been out overnight a few times, but always come right back in the morning. I don't think it does much good to try to track her down - I think she just makes the rounds and gets fed, sometimes stays in someone else's house, and she is a good hunter as well. When she comes home it is so funny. She always comes when I'm outside, walking from the same area across the street, meowing at the top of her lungs, and I go pick her up and bring her in. When she comes home after a long disappearance, she is so affectionate and eats a ton of food. I make sure she has her shots up to date and give her the flea and dewormer medication so I know she won't get sick. She is just a character - we love her.

They probably feel trapped in the same place, especially indoor cats. Outdoor cats may have found a place they preferred and run off to live there.

the cat would only run away if you are not feeding it properly, changing its litter box every now and then, and if it is not getting much affection. hope this helps.

Is your stray cat a feral cat?

Chances are that it may be, however there is a big possibility that it might not be a stray. For example, cats wander off to find prey, to find a partner or to join another colony of cats (for it is their natural thing to do) so it may not be stray. If there are cats in the woodlands or forests, it is likely for them to be feral. Big cats come from the wild, so there is not much difference when it comes to domestic cats.
