One of the major aspects of life is self replication, or reproduction. If cells didn't divide, then populations of organisms would not form, and evolution would be impossible. The more proximate cause is that as cells grow and ingest food, there is a limit to how big they can become before the cell wall no longer supports the cytoplasm. At or before this point, the cell must divide or it will lyse (split open) and die.

as a cell grows, its volume increases faster than its surface area, so it becomes harder for the cell to maintain homeostasis (harder to expel wastes and harder to obtain nutrients). because of this the cell must either stop growing or divide.cells also divide to replace old or damaged cells.

Cells are the basic building block of life. If they could not reproduce (by division, for example), then we could not grow or reproduce. In fact, we would not even exist. According to other questions on WikiAnswers, our skin replaces itself every 35 days, and our skeleton replaces itself every 7 years. That means that in 35 days, you would have no skin, and in seven years, you would have no skeleton. So keep singing "I will divide!", little cells!

Cells divide when they have reached surface area to volume ratio which no longer support diffusion of material into the call.

Why do the body cells and sex cells divide differently?

Because body cells need to make genetically identical daughter cells and sex cells need to make genetically unique cells with half the genetic material of the parent cell.
