Because they are either: A. Aggresive (because the owner treats them/trains them improperly) B. If you touched a certain spot it might be infected C. If they are laying down and trying to sleep they might attack whoever tries to pick them up or move them. You might want to do a little researcher, see if she only attacks when you touch a certain area, etc.

There could be many many answers to this broad question. One comes to mind, a lack of respect for the owner. The dog thinks he is the dominant one in the family pack. He needs to be corrected and never allowed to bite anyone or even think about it. What breed is he, how old, was he socialized well as a pup, has he been to obedience classes, etc.

You need professional help. Try putting a choke chain on him (should measure 2 inches longer than his neck length) and take him for many walks, making him mind, staying on your right side right next to you. Take him to obedience classes with an experienced teacher. Watch the Dog Whisperer. Try to find a breeder who knows your type of dog and knows about training dogs. You do need to be dominant over this dog. Make him work for everything, such as he has to sit and wait before you lay down his pan of food, walk out of the door or gateway always in front of him, do not let him go ahead of you or beside, you. You always go out first.

What protected slaves in the 1800s from being hurt?

Slaves in the 1800's had no protection from being hurt; their owners were free to hurt them for any reason, and with any severity that they wanted to. I could say that slaves were protected by the kindness of their owners, and in fact some slave owners were relatively kind, but most were not.
