It could be argued that both bark and meow are onomatopoeia; humans like to classify noises and give them names that sound like the noise themselves.
Cats and dogs of different sizes make different noises, and without seeing the animal you can't be guaranteed that you're hearing a meow and not a bark (or vise versa).
So the difference between a bark and a meow may be in our minds.
