A bitch on heat is basically the dog equivalent of a period.
A female dog is called a bitch. A male dog is called a dog. The female comes into heat once every 6 months or so. There will be some small amount of bleeding during the first part, normally lasts about 2-3 weeks. This is to help clean out the build up of uterine tissue inside of the uterus. Best thing to do is to spay your female when she is not in heat.
