Dry or Overly Firm Stools
Stools that come out too dry or hard are typically an indication of dehydration or decreased (slow) intestinal movement. Dogs with overly dry or firm stools, regardless of their shape, are at increased risk of constipation and often experience a degree of discomfort when defecating.
Loose stool can be caused by a sudden change in diet, something that the dog ate that you did not intend the dog to eat (e.g. cat poop, garbage, etc.), or an infection.
If the dog's stool is so loose that it is basically liquid or diarrhea, you should carefully collect some of the stool in a plastic bag or container and take it and your dog to the vet so it can be checked for parasites or a bacterial infection, etc.
Otherwise if the loose stool doesn't improve within 24 hours, go see a vet as well.
Make sure that a dog having loose stool or diarrhea has access to water and sufficient access to an appropriate place to relieve him- or herself.

Some causes are not drinking enough water, or eating unsuitable foods. If the dog is constipated, the vet should give you advice.
The animal will just need more liquid in its diet. You can feed some canned dog food along with its kibble to make the bowel movement a little moister if needed.
