Dogs have a high body temperature and they hang their tongues out to let heat out through their tongues. Salivating (producing spit or saliva) helps cool the dog when its tongue is hanging out.
It's like their way of sweating.
They have no sweat glands except for on their tongues so they poke their tongue out to cool off.
Dogs stick their tongues out because they are hot. Unlike people dogs do not sweat to cool down when they are hot, instead they have a long tongue which they fill with blood, stick out and then pant air over it. The blood in the tongue is thus cooled which cools the dog.
First, every dog is different. Breeds of dog have similar features in their tongues, but can still vary in length, width, and depth. Tongues in animals are for licking and lopping up water.
