Dogs and cats can learn to live together, as some people have both dogs and cats for pets, I am one of them, but in the wild, dogs and cats are natural enemies. It could be symbolic, but I think the obvious thing is that their wild cousins (wolfs, foxes, coyotes, etc) are each others predator and prey, and remember animals do have great ancestral instinct. We might also want to consider that, as predators, they are competitors for the same food sources and prey. A dog's response to a cat seems qualitatively different from their response to a squirrel, and this may have to do less with a response to prey and more with scaring away or intimidating competition for scarce resources.
Dogs do not hate cats. Often its just that they see cats as something to chase. The cat will feel threatened and then will run , in turn making the dog feel it needs to chase, and it's downhill from there and the chase is on. Actually, many cats and dogs get along just fine.

∙ 13y agoI think it has something to do with instinct. Well in the wild if cats saw an animal like a dog, then they would see them as a threat. This is probably something carried on to their domestic life.
