A dog licks you as a sign of submission, he knows you are higher up in the hierarchy of the pack than him, so he licks you as a way of saying "you're the boss, I love you". This is the same type of behaviour that is seen in wild dog and wolf packs.

== == It depends what it is licking. If it is licking you, this is a sign of affection. If it is licking itself it may be in discomfort, have an irritation, or may be anxious from isolation or boredom. If it is licking inanimate objects, it just may like to as a personal taste...

At the moment its relatively unclear why a dog will lick a human, as wolves will lick the alpha of the pack without the alpha doing anything. Its possible that it could just be the dog letting you know that it respects you or something related to that. As to licking other objects, most likely its just investigating the object and tasting it.

Some dogs have an instinct to lick you when they think you don't feel well or when you're hurt.

So don't freak out when they lick you; that just means you're a good owner and they love and they want to make you feel better.

I'm not sure but it could be lack of salt in the food. My dog has recently taken to licking her bed and a friend of the family suggested salt blocks which of course I thought was only for smaller animals but I gave it a go and she hasn't licked her bed since, you could find salt blocks in any pet store.

It Depends on a dogs personality, like if a dogs personality is more outgoing as others then there's more of a chance it will lick a lot. So yes it is normal

And if your dog doesn't lick as much then your dog is proably shy or less outgoing then other dogs. And that is totally normal as well.
