it has to do with the salt content of human sweat. when a human sweats through their foot, theinvisible salt particles accumulate on the surface of the skin. the dog, not caring or knowing any different, detects trace amounts ofsalt on the foot, andattempts to retreive it. animals will often try to consume salt or salty products as a way to keep their bodies hydrated, since saltdecreases theamount ofmoisture released from the body.

It is a way for dogs to keep healthy, communicate, and just a part of their behavior. Don't try to stop a dog who's licking its nose. It's just dry and the dog just wants to keep it "moisturized" or keep something "foreign" off. Another reason is a wayto express or show if they are in shape and healthy. A dog with a horribly dry nose condition, has some problem and either be treated or taken to the vet if it worsens. Lastly, it's just what dogs do. Like, we humans, just have to "pick our noses" Can't explain, but we do it.
