Dogs lick the air for a few reasons....
1) They may have a medical issue....just check with the vet to be sure??! Yea. =]
2) It could be a random habit!! So don't worry on that one if your dog passes the vet bill.
Hope it helped a litle!!
We have a 2 year old Jack Russel Terrier. He bites at what seem to be bugs, or dust, or floaters. He used to do this only occasionally, however, he seems to do it more frequently. We just had him to the vet and our vet said to document how often they occur. She went on to tell us that it may be a sign that our dog is having mini seizures and will need to rule out a medical condition. We have a 2 year old Jack Russel Terrier. Most dogs do this. Nobody really knows why.
but, it could be because he/she is tracking a scent.
Humans skins have pores by which perspiration takes place to control the body temperature by giving out the sweat which ultimately evaprates thus providing the cooling effect to the body. However, dogs can't perspire due to their hairy skin, hence they lick into the air to exhale the hot air inside to control the body temperature.infact, most of the animals does that.
If a dog smells something he likes, then he may lick the air to try and taste it.
There's also a behavior called "licking intention." it can mean "Consider yourself licked," "Hello over there," or "I'lm sorry for whatever I did, let me come nearer."
Dogs have very sensitive receptors on their tongues that allow them a more precise "smell"
Maybe it smells something there like food that might've been dropped there at one point.
Because............They have bettter site and can see the germs in the air.//
My dog was doing that and it turned out she had a bad tooth.
They are communicating.Dogs communicate by using body language. Consider investing in a dog body language book.
If dogs do not lick you then they do not appriciate you. Dogs lick you when you give them a treat or play with them.
Dogs lick your face and skin because they like the taste of salt. They tend to lick your face because your head is usually near theirs and it is the closest thing to lick. A dog licking your face is no different than then licking your hand or any other part of your body for that matter, and it doesn't have any adverse effects for them.
Dog ususlly lick you because they love you and that is how they show affection Sometimes dogs will lick for affection, but only about 1% of the time. Usually if dogs love you, they will lick you under your chin or on your hands. If dogs lick you on your face, that means they think they are dominant, and they want to be in charge. If they lick your face, turn your back to them and stick your nose in the air. That way they know you don't want them to do that. And if they lick a little kid in the face because you let them do that to you, most likely the kid will get scared and cry... not a good scenario. So only let them lick your hands.
To wash them.
to show affection.

Yes, they do.

They lick you beacasue dogs like to show compassion. They lick you because they love you, but also if you have been around other dogs/animals they like the taste.
Dogs lick your for a couple reasons... Either they want to get your attention,or they just like you. Some dogs just lick you for the salt on your skin.
Dogs don't actually 'like' to lick themselves - they do it to clean themselves or relieve discomfort.
