Dogs have a tremendous amount of energy. Sometimes their owners do not exercise them enough (1 to 2-mile walks every day), or give them play toys to keep them occupied.

They then find furniture a very handy thing to keep busy with - by chewing, which is a dog's nature.

The most likely cause is boredom. Increase the dog's exercise and enroll in a dog obedience class to exercise his mind.
