Answer
Downhill skiers where goggles to not only protect their eyes, but make skiing a much more enjoyable experience. If you don't wear goggles you will quickly feel the effects of rushing wind in your face. This can make your eyes water incessantly causing them to hurt and sometimes burn. Or it may be snowing out and if you don't wear goggles then good luck trying to see anything through the snow flakes.
It is important to note that ski goggles have different lenses available. Different lenses are used for different light conditions. If you ski at night then you want to use clear lenses. If you ski when it is sunny out then you want to use yellow tinted lenses. Check with your local ski shop for the various sizes of goggles and lense shades. The shade of your lenses does make a difference.
I also recommend buying goggles that have a clip on the strap. These are easier to put on.
